Something We Can’t Do Without

What is something you can’t do without? The simple, yet desired things, may come to mind. Maybe it’s coffee in the morning, a daily walk, or a Sunday afternoon nap. Some days, they really do feel like something we can’t do without. It could even go beyond the simple. Perhaps we have deep dreams and desires that we’ve been praying about for a long time.

The simple things – we know that our days can go on without those things. Although I must say, I prefer my morning coffee before plunging into my day. It’s the bigger things that we ponder and pray about that may turn into a question or maybe even several questions.

Maybe we have a faithful prayer down every day, but maybe we have doubt that sneaks in every now and then. The good news is that God is faithful and can do far more than we could ever think or imagine.

Consider Abram in Genesis. Abram and his wife desired a child. Abram wanted a son to be his heir and to bear his name. But Abram was really old. Sarah, too.

What is something in your life that you’re seeking, yet it seems far from your reach?

God keeps His promises and knowing that, we can trust and believe. Just as God had great promises in store for Abram, He has promises destined for us, too.

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great” (Genesis 15:1 ESV).

God promised Abram very great things. Despite God’s promise, Abram still had questions. We, too, may have questions. While my questions are different than Abram’s, I am encouraged that even the righteous asked God many things.

But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir” (Genesis 15:2 ESV).

I imagine Eliezer was a great steward of Abram’s home, but Abram still wanted a son of his own to carry on their family heritage.

Imagine asking God your question.

You know what is so reassuring? We can ask God anything. He wants us to ask, seek, and knock. Ask Him the tough questions. Ask Him the silly questions.

I remember one of my silly questions when God answered. It was at a retreat, and small gifts were left on the dining room table. There were slap bracelets that took me down memory lane in my childhood, and I loved what was printed on them: “Jesus is my B.F.F.”

During that season of my life, I was embracing a loving, deep friendship with Jesus. (Still am, actually). So when I saw those words, I smiled. I left and later realized I had left my “best friend” bracelet on the table. I knew the tables would be cleared by the time I remembered my forgotten treasure, but I decided to go see if I could find it. As I was rushing back to look for it, I said to myself, knowing that God was listening, maybe, just maybe, it would still be there.

All the tables were cleared as I expected, but at the table I had sat at earlier that day, there to my disbelief, was my “Jesus is my B.F.F.” bracelet. Yes, my disbelief. I didn’t expect it to be there.

Could it be that God left it there for me because He knew it meant something to me that day? He knew I would come back for it. He listens to our silly questions, and He listens to our big questions, like Abram asking God what He could give, since he still didn’t have the one thing he desired.

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he counted it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:3-5 ESV).

God promised Abram a son, and not just one son, a lot of sons.

When we’re wondering about our questions and desires that are in the waiting, may we go outside and look up at the stars? May those stars in the sky be a reminder to us that God holds our questions and has great things in store for us, too.

Why do I include my silly question and Abram’s deep-hearted question? Sometimes, it’s good to reflect on how God works even in the simplicity of our everyday lives. God cares about all our questions, big and small. He may not always answer in the way we expect, but He always answers. Ask and you will always find. As Hebrews 11 reminds us, God rewards those who seek Him. Seek God and ask Him your questions, faithfully and wholeheartedly.

I still have my “Jesus is my B.F.F.” bracelet. While it’s something I can do without, Jesus as my best friend is something I honestly can’t do without.
