Fewer Dots and More Space

I love a good conversation with friends. There are always words spoken that I treasure. I still think back on a conversation I had with a friend a couple of years ago. As we were chatting, she mentioned something that really nestled deep within my heart and still resonates today, more so now as we have encountered a changing world with fewer gatherings and events on our calendars.

These were her treasured words, “Our worth is not based on the dots on our calendar.”

I realize some of you may be asking, “Dots?” Do you know those dots on the calendar apps? Some of us have a lot of those dots! Color-coded dots representing where we’re supposed to be next. All that you have planned for the day, whether it’s the color-coded dots on your phone app, hand-written on your calendar, or maybe simply stored in the back of your mind, do you pause to ask yourself, are those “dots” necessary today?

Dots. Maybe your dots are balanced. Maybe you have too many or maybe not enough.

While I love the dots on my calendar app reminding me of upcoming events and all the color-coded reminders, I am beginning to appreciate the open white, space of my time.

I’m embracing the truth of knowing that my worth is completely wrapped up in the space I give Jesus rather than the space I give to the “dots.”

We can keep dots, rest assured, but if we are intentional about what dots we add to our days, I believe we are going to have more clarity in our minds as we give our space to Jesus. We don’t have to give up our calendars but I do believe there is power in the pause.

Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, He went up on a mountainside to pray.

Mark 6:45-46

I love that Jesus took time by Himself to go to the mountainside to pray. We, too, need that time to pause and reflect.

When you give more space to Jesus, you are giving time to fill your soul. What does your soul need today? Step away and run to the secret place with Him. Get away on that “mountainside” to talk about your concerns with Jesus. Talk to Him about the dreams deep within your heart.

And make space to on your calendar for yourself. Do something that brings you joy or focus on some goals that will help you to get closer to your dreams.

He knows which dots are important and He knows which dots you need.

Make space for you and Jesus. Maybe now is a time for fewer dots and more space with Jesus.
