Find the Stillness Even in the Waves

If you ever feel like the waves of life have come crashing in more forceful than before, remember that Jesus is there to calm your spirit and still the waves.

I’m nowhere close to ocean waves, but I can picture them as I close my eyes. I can hear the waves as they greet the shoreline. If I sit here long enough, I can even feel the ocean breeze and smell the salty air. While I may not be at the ocean, I have figurately felt those waves deep within my being.

The waves are inviting some days, the ones that slowly meet the shore. But there are also the crashing waves that try to shake my faith at times.

There have been moments when I wanted to give up and have questioned the meaning of my purpose. And I have even allowed waves of doubt to toss me around from time to time. Maybe waves of doubt have tossed your faith, too. There is hope, though, as we know that we can steady ourselves back to the stillness of our Maker.

As I close my eyes and imagine the waves rolling in, I take a moment to listen to the Spirit speak, and He gently reminds me of this –

Like the waves never cease and never give up, I don’t have to give up either.

Sometimes the waves reach you in a way that may cause you to want to give up or doubt, but remember the One who will sweep you up in His arms will remind you that you only need to be still.

When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly, the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.

Mark 4:39

We will find a great calm when we fix our thoughts and hearts on Jesus, on what is true, just like the Apostle Paul reminds us of in Philippians 4:8.

As waves of doubt swept over my mind, I had to decide to close my eyes and picture the waves. Rather than seeing waves of doubt, my perspective changed to seeing resilient and faithful waves.

Just as the Father placed boundaries on how far the ocean waves can go onshore, we can set boundaries on our thoughts.

Like the waves never give up, let’s not give up.

Even when you fail, don’t give up. Learn from it. Get back up and allow yourself to grow. Don’t give up. If we don’t fail, we don’t learn. And if we don’t learn, we don’t grow.

As I share with you now, the song Peace Be Still plays. Thanks, Spotify! Well, really, thank you, Holy Spirit.

May we allow faith to rise within us when the waves of doubt try to sweep over us. May we open our eyes to see the calm He can bring even when a storm comes.

Friend, Jesus reminds us to listen and be still. He has you, and He has me. Our Savior holds the waves, and He holds us, too. Find the stillness even in the waves.
