I’ve had a question that’s been dwelling in my mind this week. I think it’s good to consider even if there’s no complete answer. (Do we always need an answer, though?) Can we find harmony when joy and sorrow collide with one another? Joy and sorrow are interwoven into our journeys. While finding balance in the joy and sorrow may not be easy, grace can help us get there.
I have found myself rejoicing in the small joys in life, yet have felt the weight of the sorrow of others. Even when life is going smoothly momentarily for some, others face some really tough things. We all have moments of celebration, yet we’ll also face times of sadness. If both become intertwined, we can always find the good. In celebration, God is with us. And in sorrow, He is right there, too.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Romans 12:15
The Apostle Paul shares a beautiful reminder of rejoicing and mourning. I celebrate a friend invited to a speaking event to share her heart on holding the Word in our hearts. I mourn with a family who lost a beautiful child way too soon.
When we dwell in the center of God’s love, we can celebrate with one another and share in the sorrows together. It’s in the center of His love where unity and harmony dwell. Even when sorrow shakes us, we find our balance again as we rely on hope.
We rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another.
Romans 12:16
These are such wise words from Paul. Live in harmony. I’ve witnessed that as a community came together to support a family in loss. There truly is light, even in a world that can be so dark.
Jesus beams with joy when we choose the center of His love. I can’t help but linger on the word, harmony for a moment. Now, I am not a singer, but I know that when two people come together and combine their voices, they can create harmony in a song. God does that with us, too. One with joy and another with sorrow, yet they come together.
So, even when joy and sorrow meet on the same day, grace helps us find balance. Yes, we may wobble a bit, but we will not fall. Jesus holds us steady so that we can be in perfect balance.
A simple joy that I celebrate today is having the opportunity to share a devotional at Proverbs 31 Ministries. If you need encouragement on how to find balance in life, enjoy my devotional, Being Brave in the Balance.
In every joy and sorrow, may we find balance through the grace of Jesus.
This is beautiful, sis! Love your thoughts on harmony! So good! Joy and sorrow mixed. I saw that when they did sweet Olivia’s celebration of life service.
I needed this friend. Thank you for sharing your heart!
Beautifully said Melanie. Your wisdom, and gracious words are a blessing! Thank you for these reminders that help us on our journey.
