Focus on the One Thing at the Moment

Do you have more than one thing that has your focus today? On top of an already full day, you have three invites from friends you still need to respond to. Maybe you have multiple projects that you have started, and all are still incomplete. You have a lot of good things on your plate, but maybe too many you’d like to handle at the moment. What if you picked one and focused on that one thing?

What is the one thing that matters most to you at this moment?

Choose only one thing. That can be so hard, though. On top of it not being easy to choose one thing, I don’t know about you, but I’m not the best at making quick decisions. But for today – just today even – what if we decided to go with the one thing?

One project that brings you joy.

Coffee with the one friend you want to catch up with.

One decision that you need to make some space for today to talk with God about.

Maybe today is all about rest. Just be still and know that He has you.

Entrust the one thing to Jesus. If it matters to you, it matters to Him.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:41-42

I feel like I am hanging out with Martha often because I, too, can get so caught up in everything that I get distracted. Distracted by too much at once, I can get my eyes off of what truly matters at the moment.

Culture says to keep your plate full. Many things will make you feel like you’re accomplishing much. But when we choose to live in the kingdom of God, we know it’s okay to be still like Mary. And I believe we can accomplish so much more when we focus on one thing at a time.

Only one thing is needed. I find those words from Jesus to resonate deeply within my soul today. He only needs one thing. You. We only need one thing. Jesus. And we can choose to focus only on one thing today rather than becoming distracted by the many things that fill our plates.

I have my one thing. Have yours in mind?

No matter what the one thing we choose today to focus on, may it be God alone who guides us every step of the way. Sometimes, a full plate can be difficult to balance. But when we become still like Mary, we can find balance and focus on the one thing that matters.

  1. Thank you Melanie for the beautiful reminder…
Loving the way you brought forth this powerful truth in such a precious post today. Reminds me of Psalm 84:10 better is one day in His courts than a1000 elsewhere.
