How to Make Every Day Matter

Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. That is the true purpose and meaning behind everything we do, and I’ve thought a lot about this verse lately. It makes me want to pause to reflect on the meaning of the things that fill my day. Big and small. Routine and extraordinary. When we glorify God in all we do, our day will matter. It will carry meaning as we find glory in it all.

Some days are full of accomplishments, while other days are full of obstacles. Others are overflowing with excitement, while others are just quite ordinary. Some days hold our most treasured memories, while we’d rather forget other days. Some days hold meaning, and some may have gone so fast that they seem just a blur.

Even if our day carries the messy or mundane, what matters most is that every day holds life. We can welcome in even the ordinary and discover the beauty within it. And in my journey of this thing called life, I know that my best days are when I entrust my day to Jesus.

With Jesus, we’re never alone. We can count on Him to guide us. And when hope springs up in the moments you least expect it, you know that it’s the sacred gift of the Spirit living within you. With Jesus in our day, that makes it an abundant day. He is our abundant life.

For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.

Psalm 36:9

Walking with the One who is the fountain of life will shift our perspective to the light. I can see an ordinary day as an opportunity to find something creative to do when looking to Jesus, my light. Or, on a messy day, I can choose to reflect on how Jesus has faithfully ordered my steps.

Light sparks hope. Light allows the atmosphere to shift. In His light, we see the light. No matter what life may look like on this earth, we can walk each day in the light.

How can we make every day matter?

First, don’t put so much pressure on the day or even yourself. We can miss out on the step Jesus is prompting us toward if we’re too focused on trying to do what we think is right or what will please those around us. Rather than trying to go against the current of the day, follow the flow.

Second, your day doesn’t have to be perfect, not to be powerful. The days that matter include the messy, lesson-learned kind of days rather than the picture-perfect Instragam stories. The real stories of our day may involve some dirt and grime that Jesus can still use to allow us to grow even stronger. The real stories come from messy yet beautiful.

Third, don’t forget to embrace the ordinary. When we pause to allow the Spirit to speak to us even in what seems mundane, we can see with a better perspective. Maybe mundane is right where we need to be at that moment. Find the beauty in the ordinary. Make time for what’s important, even if it looks different than what everyone else would choose or what you expect.

Forth, make sure to make time for yourself. Even if you feel as if you are juggling so many plates in life right now, what is something you can do today for yourself, even if it’s just for a few minutes? We make time for what is important, and you are important.

Last, and perhaps the most important, stay in the fountain. Allow the Living Water to flow through your every thought and deeply within your heart. As we remain there, residing and basking in His light, we become light. The light shines forth beauty and reveals what is true. And the truth is what makes each day matter.

Do something you love. Do something for yourself. Do something for someone else. Make every single day matter. Whatever you do, do it to glorify the LORD. Light prevails as we glorify Jesus even in the most ordinary days and in the smallest of moments.

Every day has life, and it matters.

So today, how can you honor your day?

  1. Oh Melanie, this is so rich! A good reminder to me to slow down and rest in that everlasting flowing fountain of His love and grace. I will look to see where the fountain is flowing whether in the ordinary or the messy day and jump in.
    Thank you!
