Keep Digging For The Treasure

I love a good treasure hunt. I’ve been on a treasure hunt before, the most memorable one being at a birthday party when I was eight years old. It was a birthday party that did not disappoint, which included the best treasure hunt set up in my friend’s backyard. From hitting piñatas full of candy to finding the next clue, all the kids were having the time of their lives. I remember excitedly running from clue to clue, eager to find the winning treasure.

To my surprise, I was the first to find the treasure. After doing some digging, I was thrilled to be the lucky eight-year-old who uncovered a bag full of quarters, dimes, and nickels as my newfound treasure.

That treasure hunt brought great joy to my eight-year-old self, and today, the treasure of God’s Word fills my days with even greater joy and hope.

As a new friend recently said, there are always gems to be found in God’s Word. Keep digging.

It brings me great joy to dig deep into the Word and see what the Holy Spirit reveals to me. I have been digging in Genesis for weeks now, and I have discovered gem after gem.

Of course, there is dirt and muck of broken humanity, but aren’t you glad our Creator can make a gem out of the ugly or the broken?

“And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

There is always good to be found in Scripture and in all that our Creator does. There is always good to be found in our days and good to be discovered within ourselves. There is always a treasure to be found from our Creator.

As I read slowly and spent several weeks reading through the book of Genesis, I noticed the frailty of humanity. Deceit. Lies. Envy. Even greater, though, I recognized how God works for the good of those who love and trust Him. Despite the bad, God’s faithfulness to His promises always prevails.

One of the many gems I found in the book of Genesis is that of reconciliation. Joseph was despised by his brothers. He was disowned by them and thrown into slavery. He was wrongly accused and went to prison. Deceit. Lies. Envy.

Joseph’s brothers wanted to bury him in the dirt, but God wanted to make him a gem.

“But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.” Genesis 39:21

Despite the false accusations that would put him in a dark prison cell, God’s purpose would not keep him there.

Joseph desired to be reconciled to his brothers. That was a choice of his own. Despite the bad that his brothers plotted against him, Joseph still chose reconciliation.

Reconciliation is not always easy to achieve, but when we choose to see God’s greater plan, just as Joseph did, we discover that we, too, can rest in God’s steadfast love. We find ourselves on His good path.

Reconciliation is a gem.

Perhaps you’re seeking reconciliation, but you’re unsure how to make it there. Can I encourage you to read Joseph’s story? Camp out in Genesis and see how reconciliation unfolded in Joseph’s faithfulness to choose good over the bad.

“But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear, I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.” Genesis 50:19-21

Joseph spoke kindly to his brothers. Kindness holds such great power. Kindness and compassion, good over the ugly, help us toward reconciliation.

Keep digging. Keep digging in God’s Word for treasured gems that will illuminate your soul. Keep trusting. Keep seeking.

What gems does God have for you today?
