More of Not the Same

I’m trying something new. Digital art. Am I a pro at it? Far from it, but I’m so glad for YouTube tutorials. While it’s taking me some time (a lot of time) to learn how to use design software, it’s so much fun. The more time I invest in learning about it, I know I can get closer to creating some fun designs. Sometimes trying new things in life can be our freedom to go beyond our familiar borders of life. What are some new things, maybe even creative if you’re the creative type, that you can explore so that you can have more of not the same?

Creativity is deeply rooted within me. Growing up, I would often draw and paint anything I could find. My dad still has little rocks in his kitchen window that I transformed into painted creatures. I even carried my childhood dreams into my first year of college as an Art major before switching to a different career path. Regardless of the change in career plans, I can still find a way to spark creativity in my day.

Whether or not you consider yourself artistic, creativity also dwells within you. Is God nudging you toward more of not the same?

I believe Jesus has so much more for you and me, too! That “more” is within our reach. Just as you don’t stay the same when you grow in Christ, you don’t always stay the same in what you do. As you grow closer to the Father, false identity begins to fade. You discover new things as you choose a path that is not so worn.

The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them, and you will be changed into a different person.

1 Samuel 10:6

Just as the Spirit changed Saul into a different person, He also changed us to become different. The Spirit enables you to be different. To be . . . Transformed. Inspired. Creative. Free.

What happens when you choose more of not the same? Maybe you will find your creative side and start a new adventure. Or perhaps you change your thinking from worry and defeat to thinking and speaking about what is true, honorable, right, lovely, pure, and admirable.

I will say, the same is not always a bad thing. Many of us need routine and consistency to function the best on any given day. There are times, though, that routines keep me from venturing forward into new or challenging things, like trying digital art. But what if we find even more freedom by changing our habits? By choosing a new path that may lead us toward creativity and adventure? To learning and growth?

Let’s keep the good things the same, but may we also lean into more of what is not the same.

  1. Loved this!!! Christian growth is so amazing and I love seeing how God works. This also made me think about really being who God created for us to be. We are all different. Different gifts. We don’t have to try to be the “same” like someone else. We can allow His truth to show us who we are in Him. Beautifully created! 🙂 Thanks for this devo sis!

  2. “More of Not the Same” or “change” can be a scary word to some, yet a refreshing and exciting word to others. Some of this process comes with growth and trust in God, and some of it comes with God closing doors and opening others. He created us to do more than what we see in ourselves, if we see ourselves through His eyes, Wow, we would be shocked. We are amazing creatures made in His image. Need I say more? Take time, breath, be still, and let Him show you who you are and what you can do! Thanks, Mel for this message, it has helped me this morning!

  3. More of “not the same”….oh how good that sounds. My days frequently are “just like yesterday”. Work is the same, coming home from work most often is the same. I do want different! I want “not the same”. I want to be more like Jesus, allowing the Holy Spirit to work on me (to make me more like Jesus) is the goal. Thanks, Melanie for this reminder.
