Seeing the Wonder in a Surprise

Several months ago, I grabbed a pack of wildflower seeds at the peak of spring. The seed pack stayed unopened for a while before I planted them. Honestly, I wasn’t sure that they would grow. Eventually, I found a space in my flowerbed and dropped the seeds into the dirt. I was determined to trust that they would grow. It took longer than expected for the flowers to bloom, but as I waited, I waited in great anticipation. I was anticipating the small surprise of what color would come forth. Awaiting and seeing the wonder in a surprise, even the blooms of wildflowers, can bring us much joy.

While our days may fill up faster than we want with necessary everyday life things, we should make room to fill some of that space with joy and wonder. Remember designing the sky in your mind as a kid, as you imagined the clouds forming a bear, cat, or heart? Planting that little pack of wildflower seeds reminded me of those simple childlike joys.

It’s not always the grand things that bring wonder. It is the simple that brings us joy in the wonder, too. So even in the midst of our every day, may we pause long enough to enjoy the wonder of the small surprises.

I’m talking about those small surprises that bring a smile to your day. An impromptu coffee hour with a friend, mailing a card to someone by snail mail, just because, or tucking some seeds in the ground and waiting for them to bloom a surprise flower.

Find joy there. This all inspired my heart a couple of months ago when I felt the tension and pull of everyday life. Jesus said we can live life abundantly. Jesus is life, and that life is within us.

I came that they might have life and might have it abundandtly.

John 10:10b

Life in the Greek translation, means to live, having a life of bliss and glory in the kingdom of God, and the seat of personality. Of course, life is not always blissful and carefree, but with Jesus, we have hope that leads us toward wonder and truth.

Our souls are uniquely designed by God and are the center of who we are. I don’t know about you, but that makes me want to sit with joy. I want to sit with peace and enjoy the wonder of God’s design unfolding each new day.

Are some of your days dull, aching for purpose? Trust that you can grow even in those days.

Are you so busy throughout the day that you miss the wonder of the small moments? Pause and look for the wonder in the small joyful surprises that can join your day.

This blog holds a lot of space for reminders of simple joys and wonders. Thanks for coming along on this wonder-filled journey with me!

  1. Love this Melanie!
Surprised by the joy of what is starting to bloom. Such assuring thoughts. Thanks for blogging this!

  2. It is the small things I enjoy every morning. Birds feeding & fighting at my bird feeder deer walking through the yard. looking at God’s wonder in creation all the trees different color green and soon change color. My dog laying on the couch beside me.
And then the big thing setting in God’s presence studing the word and also thinking about good friends. Today is my birthday I have gotten old. I get up in the morning I ache I move slower but that is part of life and I am blessed and I thank Him for every day for this day. Yes the little things matter.
