Simple joys are something I like to revisit more than once here on this blog. It’s an invitation to pause from life, even if it’s just for a minute or two. I imagine giving yourself a minute or two will make room for even more time to enjoy what brings you joy during the ordinary or hard things. So, what simple joys have you enjoyed this season?
I was first inspired by simple joys when I read Chrystal Evans Hurst’s book, She’s Still There. While it has been several years since I read her book, I still remember her sharing how simple joys matter in our lives. I can relate to what she shares because simple joys have always awakened my soul. When life becomes busy or burdened, there are always tiny yet big reminders of God’s light and hope.
Whether it’s seeing the sun rising, flowers in full bloom in a random place along a stretch of highway, or clouds of all shapes stretched across blue skies, light fills my soul.
Not only can I sense the light of Christ, but I can also feel the lightness as I rest in the goodness of those simple joys.
Some of my simple joys are the same year around, like coffee and sunsets, but I also find simple joys that are sparked in a certain season. Here are a few simple joys that have brought light to my soul:
Looking up at the stars early in the morning before the sun comes up, feeling the cold on my face.
Trying new things, like cooking. Cooking is not something I choose for fun, but I’ve been trying to find joy in it. I’ve discovered I can keep it simple, like throwing greens in the air fryer. Some have come out black, but others have come out pretty tasty. The laughter of failed cooking can be a simple joy.
My cup of hot, black coffee and heated blanket on cold winter mornings as I sit with Jesus. There is something about the early mornings. It is so fleeting, yet a sacred time.
My drives with a good podcast. I’ve been listening to the Rita Springer podcast. I love hearing her deep thoughts. There’s something about the depth she brings that tears down religion.
On those cold, cloudy days, I find joy in the warm light of a cozy lamp.
Meaningful conversations with friends.
Coffee and chatting with the generations behind me.
What catches the light for you? Simple. Ordinary. Big. No matter what, it catches the light if it brings you joy or a smile.
I love the thought of reflecting and noticing simple joys!
Here are some of mine:
A cup of coffee that I get out. ๐
Rainy days- the light of a lamp
Quiet early mornings
Sister days (that may be a huge joy! lol)
Snuggles with my dog Reuben (especially since I get to work from home now)
That I can wear fleece pants everyday! ๐ It is the little things! comfort!
Movie night with my husband
the Sunrise and seeing the mountains out my windows from home
Simple joys for me include seeing the brightest red cardinals at our feeder looking like theyโve been painted with a brush , and they have , a heavenly brush . Listening to children laugh or sing . Warm clean towels fresh from the dryer . Itโs the little things that bring greatest joy .
I love early morning coffee before I have to get the kids up for school. Its quite and I can read without interruption. Once 6 AM hits its like the start of a race. But from 4:30 – 5:55, itโs wonderful!
