As I sit drinking coffee in the early morning, listening to a bird singing right outside my window, I realize this is right where I want to be. While the demands of the day will come soon, I enjoy this very moment. I could easily get caught up in swirling thoughts that may want to bring in concerns. However, I choose to embrace the stillness.
No matter how many important tasks we may have to tackle today, I encourage us to take a moment to embrace the present moment. Sitting in these moments, listening to the birds, and reflecting with Jesus is what I love most. What do you love most about today?
The morning time for me seems to invite reflection, maybe because it is a little quieter. When I opened up my day planner, I came across a page printed in big, colorful letters that says, “Love all that you do.”
Fun fact: I don’t write tasks down in my day calendar. Instead, I use it to journal my thoughts and write down Scripture that speaks to me. Does anyone else do this? E-mail me if you do! I am curious if I’m the only one.
Back to the phrase, “Love all that you do.” What comes to mind for you?
When I first read it, it stirred a desire in my heart to want to enjoy life and love each day. Even on the days that are not easy, I want to notice the good around me. I don’t want the missed tasks (because I don’t write them in my day planner) to upset me. And I don’t want my least favorite things that I need to do to cloud the moments that do bring joy and light to my day.
We may have a lot to do today. Do we love it all? Probably not. Some things in life are far from being what we enjoy but perhaps necessary. I like to see them as growing opportunities. While I have not mastered loving all that I do, I notice ordinary moments as divine and am learning to take more time for the things that I do love to do. And while I don’t always love the ordinary or the downright hard things, I want to move through them in love.
Do everything in love.
1 Corinthians 16:14
I love this short verse in the Bible. Brief yet mighty. Do everything in love. It takes me back to what I read in my day planner, love all that you do.
The One who is love invites us to do everything in love.
It takes practice. And it takes courage sometimes. When I’m washing another load of laundry, I can smile and be glad for a washer and dryer. As I go to the gym before my coffee, I can be grateful that I can walk and move and look forward to coffee afterward. If I get caught in traffic, that means I have more time to listen to one of my favorite podcasts.
Do I have it all together, loving all I do? Of course not. But I am finding myself looking for the small treasures within these ordinary things. May we do everything in love – in the ordinary, extraordinary, and even the days that are hard.
Now, let’s turn the question around. What does Jesus love most about you? Maybe He loves that you decide to push aside the demands and concerns and just sit with Him. Perhaps He smiles along with you as you laugh at your mistakes. I imagine He cheers you on as you take a step forward to make decisions that may not be easy.
Every day looks a little different, but today, simply realizing that I can embrace this moment, as simple as a bird singing, is what I love most. And even greater, what I love most is that we have a Savior, a Counselor, and a friend who is there to enjoy the treasures with us.
What do you love most about today?
