Do you ever second guess? I know I do more often than I would like and maybe you can relate. As I was reading Genesis 3 the other day, I realized that Eve second guessed, too. The father of lies planted seeds of doubt in Eve’s mind as he asked her the question, “Did God really say . . . ”
Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?
Genesis 3:1
The father of lies is just that – all lies. He can quickly cause us to doubt if we’re not careful. We don’t have to listen or accept the lies when we hold onto the truth that lives within us.
Disclaimer: I don’t focus much on the enemy on this blog. Not to say that he is not real and doesn’t torment. I know he can cause a lot of havoc if we allow him to but what I have realized in my walk with the Father of truth is that I don’t have to spend all my time fighting the enemy. I recognize when he tries to sneak in and then I simply remind him the One who lives within me is greater. Be mindful of the enemy, yes, so he doesn’t steal from you but know this, God has the final word.
It’s so easy sometimes to fall into the second guessing trap just like Eve. Hearing that question, “Did God really say . . . ?” was enough for Eve to second guess.
I can relate to Eve. Anyone else?
Our thoughts can go something like this – Did God really say to trust Him in this situation that is really uncomfortable? Did God really say to press on toward this dream that seems impossible? Did God really say that I need to forgive because if I am completely honest, I am not sure that I can? Did God really say I am fearfully and wonderfully made? Did God really say I am unconditionally loved?
Yes! And yes a thousand times!
Our Father God has the final word. And His final word is truth. We don’t have to get stuck in second guessing. We can be confident in the truth.
We can be confident in knowing that Jesus gives life within us and we don’t have to stay unsure. The closer we are with Jesus, the more we are going to have a confidence that no one can break.
Our Father has our interest in mind. He wants us to be safe. He wants us to rest in His unconditional love. He wants us to choose truth over the lies. We don’t have to second guess through life. We can flourish in the truth of our Father.
But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.”
Psalm 52:8
When we’re flourishing in the love of God, we will not be uprooted by second guessing or lies. We will know with confidence when it is the Father telling us to go to the left or to the right. We will know with full assurance of faith that we can endure and overcome any trial. We will know that even when we don’t get it completely right, we are still loved.
So what do we do when we hear that question “Did God really say . . .” start to drift into our thoughts causing us to want to second guess? We stand on the truth, friends. We remind ourselves to turn to the One who will lead us to what is true.
Powerful reminders! So thankful for your blog!
