When It Feels Out of Place

I was surprised to see flowers growing in the middle of the front yard. The dark pink petunias seemed to glow amidst all the green grass blades. Last year, we had a bare spot in our front yard and transferred some dirt to fill it. Not realizing there were remnants of last summer’s flowers, I was expecting grass to fill in. Although they seemed out of place, I didn’t mind seeing them there at all.

While I’ll probably need to move the flowers, for now, I admire their bravery in trying a new place.

Are you stepping into something new or unfamiliar? While it may look different than what you expected, ask the Holy Spirit to show you what God wants you to see. He will give you the courage to be brave.

Sometimes, what may seem out of place to us can bring us a new way of looking at things.

I’ve been doing just that in my own day-to-day life. While things should look or happen a certain way because of what I’ve learned as normal, I am delighted when I see something different. It can be as simple as the flowers growing out of place right in the middle of the lawn to grab my attention.

What if it doesn’t look like anything you’ve experienced or seen before?

I came across a verse that always makes me pause, and it makes me reflect on this question.

“Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire clear as the sky itself.”

Exodus 24:9-10

Can you imagine walking on a path that looked like sapphire and was clear as a sunny day with blue skies? I would be amazed and probably would have to grab my phone to snap a photo. We don’t see anything like that here on earth. I haven’t, anyways. If you have, send me a picture!

As I read these Scripture verses of Moses’ experience, I am captivated by our Maker and when life seems out of sorts or things are out of place, I can remind myself that it’s okay. All we have to do is go to God. Just as Moses went up to the mountain, we, too, can go to the Father to sit, reflect, or ask our questions. We can come just as we are.

As I look out at those flowers that should be in a flower bed instead of the lawn, I remind myself that what is different and what may seem out of place, is good.

Even if you feel out of place or if something in your life seems out of balance, you can still grow there. Look to the One who is your counsel and friend, the very One who gives you insight and wisdom.

I can recall times when I’ve felt out of place, not knowing where I fit in. Despite feeling out of place though, maybe that’s right where I was supposed to be. Have you been there, too? In that place you’re in, even if you’re the only “flower” out in the middle of the yard, know that you are still growing.

We can grow even in the places we least expect it. Oftentimes, that is where we experience the most transformation. Be brave to trust whatever it looks like, even if it seems out of place.

  1. Mel this is so needed today. to remember that God will always love right where we are, even in our” out of place” stage in life. I’m reminded that His promises are always sure and true no matter what, He never changes.
    Thank you for this reminder.
    Love you

  2. Love this as always sis! I’m so thankful for Our Father who sees way more than we do and what a gift when He allows us to see things that are different. We can embrace it all! Great reminder that He leads our steps. Even if it doesn’t look like we think it should, that’s okay. ❤️
