When You’re the Only One

As I scanned the room of people, I noticed everyone in conversation, laughing and sharing. I saw many friends who I knew I could strike up a conversation with. However, I noticed someone sitting alone in the back as everyone else engaged in laughter and conversation. I recognized him but couldn’t remember his name. Was he the only one? The only one not sharing in conversation?

I walked past my friends and made my way toward the back. While I didn’t remember this man’s name, I remembered him and his wife well and decided to talk to him. We reminisced about how the years had gone by, and I’m grateful for the conversation.

Whether in a room full of people or facing a situation that you feel like no one else can relate to when it feels as if you’re the only one, there is always One who is with you.

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matthew 28:20

We are never alone. Christ is with us.

Some people are wonderfully made as social butterflies. I was not. I wrestled with that for most of my life. However, the more I get closer to Christ, the more I recognize I can be transformed with some butterfly wings! The Holy Spirit can give me enough courage to look past the butterflies in my stomach and imagine butterfly wings on my shoulders. We can have the confidence to be the love to others.

Even in our weakness, His strength can grow a conversation of grace and love. His confidence will carry us through.

We can be that one person to encourage someone alone, but even if no one shows up, we don’t have to be discouraged because we have Christ within us. I’ve been the one in a room alone before, but I also am so reassured because of the love of Christ. The One who lives within me talks to me and always walks me to a place of hope.

When we choose to be the love of Christ to others, His love grows and carries from one person to another.

So whether you’re the social butterfly or the one with the butterflies in your stomach, we all carry the same love.

If you’re the only one in the back of the room not surrounded by friends laughing and talking, you’re not alone. Surely, as Jesus says, He is with you always.

Even if you’re the only one, Christ is with you. Keep carrying His love.

  1. I love this and can relate on so many levels!!!! Just heard a message too that reminded me that no matter what, Christ is always with us. The one thing that carried me through my college years (and beyond)… Away from my sis, my best friend and honestly my safe place, she always told me… Jesus is by your side. That has stuck with me. This blog post (written by my one and only sis) reminds me of that!!!! Also love the idea to just picture those butterfly wings. 😉
